Rick Roberts: Taking Pride in Hanover Park
"I'm proud of Hanover Park, and it's my goal to spread this pride throughout our hometown," says Rick Roberts, candidate for Village Trustee on the Hanover Park Progress ticket. "There is so much energy and talent in this town that together we can solve any challenge that faces us. I know it."
Rick Roberts has been a Hanover Park resident for nearly 20 years, all of which he has spent volunteering with Hanover Park's youth. For the last five years, Rick has been elected president of the Hanover Park Hurricane Football Association. His guiding philosophy as president was, “Never turn a child away from playing football or cheerleading.” In recognition for his service to our community, Rick was presented with the Certificate of Appreciation from Mayor Irv Bock and with the Hanover Park Youth Leadership award in 2008.
"With my experience with both the Football and Baseball Associations, I am very experienced with handling situations with people from small issues to very complex issues," Rick states. "You see, when you volunteer with our youth, you are entering their lives and the lives of their families. I took my volunteer work very seriously, because our kids are the most valuable assets in all of our lives. I always treated the children, parents, and other volunteers with respect, because there is nothing more important than our young people.
Rick's volunteer work is only part of the knowledge and experiences he brings to Hanover Park. Rick is a veteran of the United States Navy serving at the Naval Air Test Center and on the USS Saratoga. He is a member of American Legion and works at Amco Industries in Itasca, IL as a welder and steel fabrication technician. "In my Navy years, I had to control sitations that could involve many people lives such as engine maintenance decisions and flight deck operations," commented Rick. "As a petty officer in the US Navy, I was in charge of maintaining 30 million dollar fighter aircrafts and was in charge of aircraft maintenance crews that consisted of 4 - 6 men. I also was the damage control petty officer in my dept. Out of 5000 men, I won the USS Saratoga Petty Officer of the month award and also the USS Saratoga Man of the Month Award."
Rick's approach to the Village government places elected officials in the role of problem solvers and partners with residents. "I feel that the Village government should be more in touch with the needs of our senior citizens and also help youth organizations keep kids involved in sports, clubs, and the arts," states Rick. "Our government should serve all of our citizens by embracing the diversity that exists within Hanover Park."
Beyond this, Rick says that cleaning up parking lots, supporting business, and funding fire and police are key issues that the Board of Trustees needs to address in the next year. This past November, Rick was appointed chairman of the new Veterans Committee organized by Mayor Craig to recognize the sacrifices made by members of our armed services and their families.
When asked about his guiding values, he says, "family, integrity, love of community and country. These are the things I set as priorities in my life." |
